I photographed the white deer herd at the Seneca Army Depot, which was a WWII and Cold War munitions storage facility that supposedly held around 1,500 nuclear weapons and that also supposedly held the radioactive material used in the first two atomic bombs dropped in Japan, for the Democrat and Chronicle last week, hopefully you saw the story in Sunday’s paper!

There are between 200 and 300 of these white deer within the 10,500 acre Seneca Army Depot.

The Seneca Army Depot is leasing track space to house train cars which sit unused, due largely to the slowing economy.

One of 600-something bunkers that held up to 50,000 pounds of weapons each.

Seneca White Deer chairman Dennis Money guiding our tour.

Rows and rows of bunkers for as far as you could see.

It isn’t albino, just white.

This is the entry to the Q section of the Seneca Army Depot, which was the most secure area of the facility.

Ospreys and other birds of prey now build nests within the vacant Seneca Army Depot.

This isn’t actually a building, it is 14′ of solid concrete which sat atop 3-bank vaults that held the nuclear triggers for the first generation weapons… I was told that the old bombs used physical keys and not electronic codes!

Rob’s grandmother used to own a farm which was seized in around 1940 in order to construct the Seneca Army Depot.
Have a great day!
My friend Garry Geer took this picture of Louis Perticone and I at Java’s at the Public Market last week.
